7.10.1 - Introduction

Regulations for highway power supplies feeding street furniture and street located equipment are new to the 16th Edition. The need for such regulations has arisen because of the increasing use of electrical supplies for street and footpath lighting, traffic signs, traffic control and traffic surveillance equipment. These uses are described as street furniture. Also covered by the Regulations is street located equipment which includes telephone kiosks, bus shelters, advertising signs and car park ticket dispensers. As far as the Regulations are concerned, no distinction is drawn between the two categories, both street furniture and street located equipment being subject to their requirements.

It must not be thought that these Regulations apply only to installations on public highways. They must also be followed in installations within private roads, car parks, and other areas where people will be present. They do not apply to suppliers' works, which in this context means the overhead or underground supplies feeding the equipment. It does apply, however, to overhead or underground supplies installed to interconnect street furniture or street located equipment from the point of supply.
